She commissioned the acquisition of the instrument to <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/regional-routes\/baroque-organs\/neapolitan-baroque-in-the-court-of-the-bourbons-the-organ-of-saint-barbara\/carlo-broschi-farinelli\/\" title=\"Carlo Broschi Farinelli\">Carlo Broschi Farinelli<\/a>, a <a href=\"#\" class=\"tooltip yellow-tooltip\"><em>castrato<\/em><span>The <em>Castrati<\/em> were singers who were subjected to castration as children, who maintained a high-pitched voice for life, thus being able to perform in female roles.<\/span><\/a> singer, who, in turn commissioned the construction of the organ to the Neapolitan friar Jos\u00e9 de Monticelli, in the years 1758-1759. It was therefore made in <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/urban-routes\/lecce\/piazza-santoronzo\/naples\/\" title=\"Naples\">Naples<\/a>, transported by ship to <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/regional-routes\/duke-of-lerma\/denia-and-the-rise-of-its-marquis\/valencia\/\" title=\"Valencia\">Valencia<\/a> and then transported on various wagons to the <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/urban-routes\/valladolid\/the-church-of-san-pablo\/court\/\" title=\"Court\">court<\/a> of <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/urban-routes\/alcala-de-henares\/the-ermita-del-cristo-de-los-doctrinos\/madrid\/\" title=\"Madrid\">Madrid<\/a>. During the long journey, the organ suffered damage which was repaired upon arrival in Madrid. The Queen herself paid for the costs of the construction and transportation of the instrument.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/digitalhistory.unite.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/santa_barbara1_250x164.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"164\" alt=\"Santa Barbara1\" align=\"left\">The organ has a case with three fa\u00e7ades. It is in Baroque style with golden decorations on a white background. The upper part is dominated by two angel musicians and the royal coats of arms (photo 1). The central fa\u00e7ade, now empty for restoration and cleaning, would include three <a href=\"#\" class=\"tooltip yellow-tooltip\"><em>castillos de tubos<\/em><span>The term refers to the way to place the pipes in the windows of the cabinet, always in a geometric way and in symmetry. They are reminiscent of the towers of castles.<\/span><\/a> (castles of pipes), which correspond to the organ stop on a frieze of trumpets. The lateral fa\u00e7ades follow the same pattern, with only a &#8220;castle&#8221; on a wing of trumpets in tune with eight feet. The latticework of the lower organ is found in the lower section of the structure. The mechanical part is a mix of Baroque and Romantic organs, preserving the <a href=\"#\" class=\"tooltip yellow-tooltip\"><em>secretos<\/em><span>The box that contains the mechanisms for the distribution of the wind to the pipes.<\/span><\/a> and arrangement of the original <a href=\"#\" class=\"tooltip yellow-tooltip\"><em>registros<\/em><span>A register in the organ is a set of pipes of the same timbre.<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/digitalhistory.unite.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/santa_barbara2_251x163.jpg\" width=\"251\" height=\"163\" alt=\"Santa Barbara2\" align=\"left\">It is the organ that, including those described in this itinerary, represents the best combination of Italian traditions and of other places in Europe. For example, among its original registers there was the Italian flute, and its old <a href=\"#\" class=\"tooltip yellow-tooltip\">console<span>The organist&#8217;s place, where the keyboard is<\/span><\/a> &#8211; now replaced by a modern one, with pneumatic controls and a&nbsp; keyboard and new pedals &#8211; it had the typical characteristics of the organs of Southern Germany and Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The magnificent organ of <em>Santa Barbara<\/em> was in a poor state of preservation.
