Following the Roman model of the statue of Marcus Aurelius and the Renaissance monument to Gattamelata by Donatello, many artists took up the challenge of a similar task. In the Baroque period, one can cite the examples of the equestrian statue depicting King <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/louis-xiv-of-bourbon\/\" title=\"Louis XIV of Bourbon\">Louis XIV of France<\/a>, designed by <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/regional-routes\/laquila\/bugnara\/gian-lorenzo-bernini\/\" title=\"Gian Lorenzo Bernini\">Gian Lorenzo Bernini<\/a>, or the famous sculptures with which the Florentine <a href=\"#\" class=\"tooltip yellow-tooltip\">Francesco Mochi<span>Francesco Mochi (1580-1654) can be counted among the initiators of the Baroque in Italy. Trained in Mannerism, the Tuscan sculptor was often at odds with Bernini. Among his works was the group of the Annunciation in the cathedral of Orvieto, the equestrian monuments of Alessandro and Ranuccio Farnese and Saint Veronica in Saint Peter&#8217;s Basilica in Rome.<\/span><\/a> in Piacenza depicted the likenesses of <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/alessandro-farnese\/\" title=\"Alessandro Farnese\">Alessandro<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/ranuccio-i-farnese\/\" title=\"Ranuccio I Farnese\">Ranuccio Farnese<\/a>. In this context, a special place must be reserved for the equestrian statues that depicted the sovereigns of Spain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/kingdom-of-castile\/\" title=\"Kingdom of Castile\">crowns of Castile<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/regional-routes\/duke-of-lerma\/denia-and-the-rise-of-its-marquis\/kingdom-of-aragon\/\" title=\"Kingdom of Aragon\">Aragon<\/a>, united by the marriage (1469) of the <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/urban-routes\/alcala-de-henares\/alcala-de-henares-the-town-of-cisneros-cervantes-and-the-jesuits\/catholic-monarchs\/\" title=\"Catholic Monarchs\">Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella<\/a>, girded the heads of the rulers of the Habsburg dynasty for almost two hundred years. After <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/philip-i-of-habsburg\/\" title=\"Philip I of Habsburg\">Philip I known as &#8220;the Beautiful&#8221;<\/a>, the husband of the daughter of the Catholic Kings <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/joanna-i-of-castile\/\" title=\"Joanna I of Castile\">Joanna &#8220;the Mad&#8221;<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/urban-routes\/lecce\/other-works\/charles-v-of-habsburg\/\" title=\"Charles V of Habsburg\">Charles V<\/a> (1500-1558) was the first Habsburg monarch to make of Spain the main power of the time. When he decided to abdicate (1556), his vast possessions were divided between his brother <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/ferdinand-i-of-habsburg\/\" title=\"Ferdinand I of Habsburg\">Ferdinand<\/a>, who received the Empire, and his son <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/urban-routes\/alcala-de-henares\/the-ermita-del-cristo-de-los-doctrinos\/philip-ii-of-habsburg\/\" title=\"Philip II of Habsburg\">Philip II<\/a> (1527-1598), who succeeded him as the head of a monarchy which included, outside the Iberian peninsula, the <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/urban-routes\/lecce\/other-works\/kingdom-of-naples\/\" title=\"Kingdom of Naples\">kingdoms of Naples<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/regional-routes\/wars-of-saints\/conflicting-religiosity\/kingdom-of-sicily\/\" title=\"Kingdom of Sicily\">Sicily<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/international-routes\/equestrian-statues\/the-equestrian-statues-and-the-spanish-monarchy\/kingdom-of-sardinia\/\" title=\"Kingdom of Sardinia\">Sardinia<\/a>, the <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/regional-routes\/lombard-villas\/palazzo-arese-borromeo-in-cesano-maderno\/the-duchy-of-milan\/\" title=\"The Duchy of Milan\">duchy of Milan<\/a>, the <a href=\"\/en\/territories\/regional-routes\/south-eastern-sicily\/1693-a-disastrous-earthquake\/the-netherlands\/\" title=\"The Netherlands\">Netherlands<\/a> and the American colonies. During the seventeenth century he was followed on the throne by Philip III (1578-1621), Philip IV (1605-1665) and Charles II (1661-1700).
