He was distinguished for his military skills first in the Iberian Peninsula, such as during the war for the conquest of Granada, and then especially in Italy, where he was sent by Ferdinand the Catholic to contend with the French dominion over the kingdom of Naples. His military successes earned him the title of the Great Captain, as well as estates and noble titles of Duke of Terranova and Sessa. After victories in the battles of Ruvo, Cerignola and Garigliano, he completed the Spanish conquest of the kingdom of Naples. He ruled the kingdom as viceroy from 1503 to 1507.
