The main element of the past of B\u00e9jar is its link with the family of Z\u00fa\u00f1iga, who received it in 1396, transforming it into a <em>se\u00f1or\u00edo<\/em> and then into a duchy under the Catholic Monarchs. An important part of the economy of the area is still the textile industry, started and invigorated by the Dukes of B\u00e9jar from the sixteenth century.
