In 1545 he was promoted to the archbishopric of Toledo, and from there took upon a strict action defense of Catholic orthodoxy, using the Inquisition and imposing statutes of <em>limpieza de sangre<\/em> to the detriment of converted Jews and <em>Moriscos<\/em> of Spain in the sixteenth century.
