The event is based on an event which actually happened in 1276: the siege of the town launched by the legendary Al-Alzraq, then a Muslim leader in the fight against the king of Aragon <a href=\"\/en\/themes\/festivals\/giants-of-barcelona\/jaume-i-of-aragon\/\" title=\"Jaume I of Aragon\">James I<\/a>, the creator of the &#8220;reconquest&#8221; of Valencia. Legend attributes the victory of the Christians to the miraculous appearance of St. George, which vanquished Al-Alzraq. It seems that the first representations of the battle of the Moors and Christians in Alcoy date back to the sixteenth century, although the first documents that attest to the celebration date from the end of the following century. Since the eighteenth century the staging took place around the reduced-scale reproduction of a castle.
