Pedro Calderón de la Barca

Calderon de la BarcaPedro Calderón de la Barcawas a writer of the Baroque Spanish Siglo de Oro. Born in Madrid in 1600, he studied at the Jesuit Colegio Imperial in the same city, and in 1614 he went to Alcalá de Henares, where he completed his studies. His consecration as a playwright came when the Dukes of Alba became his patrons. In old age, Calderón decided to receive priestly orders, becoming Philip IV’s honourary chaplain. His theatrical works are enthralling and of great literary quality and also convey a strong ideological content. Among them, there is La vida es sueño, a philosophical drama written in 1636, and his famous and numerous Autos sacramentales. He died in Madrid in 1681.
