The spread of Giants in Europe

Giganti di Barrafranca2The European regions most affected by this particular festive custom, and that can boast this heritage which has existed for centuries, are mostly concentrated in Belgium, in the south of Holland and in the north of France (with some notable exceptions in the South), in Spain and in southern Italy. The Giants are also found to a lesser degree in Portugal, southern England, Germany, Austria and Russia (even if only in more recent times). Some feasts which are celebrated in the territories of the Low Countries (now situated between Belgium and France) have been recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
