Charles IV of Bourbon

Carlo IVSon of Charles III and Maria Amalia of Saxony, Charles IV of Bourbon (1748-1819) was King of Spain from 1788 to 1808. His reign was marked by revolutions and traumatic changes, due to the weakness of character and inability in the government of this monarch. He always remained in the shadow of his favourite, Manuel Godoy, and was overwhelmed by the events of the French Revolution of 1789. The season of reforms started by Charles III had now ended, leaving behind an economic crisis and social malaise that, added to the French events, put in danger the survival of the Spanish monarchy. In addition to that, the king’s son, Ferdinand, wanted to move away from the power Godoy and depose his father in the famous “conspiracy of the Escorial”, which, however, ended in complete failure. In front of a landscape so critical, Napoleon took advantage of the weakness of Charles IV in order to give the Spanish Crown to his brother Joseph Bonaparte. Against the French occupation in 1808, there was a popular revolt (“El Motin de Aranjuez”) against the monarchs, during which Godoy was taken prisoner. Charles IV had not other choice and abdicated in favour of his son, Fernando VII “el Deseado” (the desired).
