Luca Giordano
Luca Giordano (1634-1705) was born in Naples, where he apprenticed with Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652). Arriving in Rome in his early twenties, he came into contact with Pietro da Cortona and with the Neo Venetian school. In the following years he stayed in Bologna, Parma, Venice, Naples and Florence, and then lived, at the invitation of King Charles II (1661-1700), at the Spanish court for a decade (1692-1702). Returning to Naples, he worked on his last work, the frescoes of the Chapel of the Treasury of San Martino. Among his works: The Penitent Magdalene, the Wedding at Cana, Saint Michael defeats the rebel angels, The Deposition of Christ, Death of Seneca, The Marriage of the Virgin, The Adoration of the Shepherds.
