Luis de Aliaga

Luis de Aliaga (1560-1626) was a Spanish politician and a religious. Aragonese, he entered the Dominican Order, and had a successful career thanks to the protection of the general of the Order, Jerónimo Xavierre. When Xavierre became the personal confessor of Philip III (1578-1621), Aliaga took his place as the personal confessor of the Duke of Lerma. Lerma himself wanted him as confessor to the king after Xavierre’s death (1608). The choice of the valido soon proved risky, because Aliaga showed an early interest in establishing himself as the primary counselor and confidant of the king. Together with the Duke of Uceda he was largely responsible for Lerma’s departure from the court (1618) and the following year he obtained the post of General Inquisitor. Upon the death of Philip III was the object of violent attacks for his conduct. Exiled from the court, he died at Zaragosa in 1626.
