Paolo De Matteis

Paolo De Matteis (1662-1728) was a painter mainly active in the kingdom of Naples. A pupil of Luca Giordano, he met the Marquis del Carpio, Gaspar Méndez de Haro y Guzmán, who later returned to Naples in 1683, when the Marquis was appointed viceroy of Naples. In later years, he also worked in France under the protection of Louis XIV, then in Calabria and Genoa. Between 1723 and 1725 he worked in Rome for Pope Innocent XIII. His works are now scattered in various Italian and foreign cities, such as Naples, Paris, Madrid, Genoa, Lecce and in numerous private collections in America. At Cassino, the famous Benedictine abbey houses the canvas of The Assumption of the Virgin, which survived the bombings of World War II.
