Juan Martínez Silíceo

Juan Martínez Silíceo (1477-1557) was a professor at the University of Salamanca until, in 1534, he was appointed tutor to the prince, the future King Philip II. In 1545 he was promoted to the archbishopric of Toledo, and from there took upon a strict action defense of Catholic orthodoxy, using the Inquisition and imposing statutes of limpieza de sangre to the detriment of converted Jews and Moriscos of Spain in the sixteenth century. He was made a cardinal in 1556, but died the following year.
