The Giants in north-eastern Sicily

The connection between the myth of giants and religion in preserved and underlined in southern-Italy’s giant repertoire also by other enormous figures: the Santoni of Modica (Syracuse), that represent the Apostoles (among them there is perhaps a Giant representing Saint Cristopher); the Saint Peter of Caltagirone (Catania); the Santoni of Aidone and Barrafranca (Enna); the Sampauluna of San Cataldo (Caltanissetta). These are giants which parade on Easter Sunday (in the case of Barrafranca also on Holy Friday, together with Mary, l’Addolorata) in order to give the good news of Christ’s Resurrection to the Madonna.
