Oristano
The capital of the old Giudicato of Arborea, the town of Oristano is currently the capital of the Sardinian province with the same name. Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the town resisted the Catalan-Aragonese troops, hampering the conquest of the island. In 1420, the Judge became part of the kingdom of Aragon. From then on it followed the fate of Sardinia, passing under the Spanish Crown and that of the Savoy. An example of Baroque art in the city is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Saint Mary of the Assumption); while the Church of the Carmine is one of the finest examples of Sardinian Rococo. Holy Monday in Oristano see a procession that takes place through seven churches in the city as many wooden statues are carried by the Confraternity of the Santissimo Nome di Gesù (Holy Name of Jesus), statues which are designed to represent the most important scenes of the Passion of Christ.
